First-Time Driver: DATA/TLSAE, DETS

If you're getting your first Florida driver's license, you must complete the required driving education course for your age.

  • DATA/TLSAE (Drug, Alcohol and Traffic Awareness/Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education) is required for new drivers 18 and older. This course covers the dangers of alcohol and drug use along with the basics of safe driving.
  • DETS (Driver Education Traffic Safety) is required for teen drivers ages 15 to 17 before applying for a learner's permit. It addresses defensive driving, traffic laws and more.

Both courses are fully approved by the FLHSMV and are available 100% online.

Florida Mature Driver Course and Insurance Discount

If you are 55 or older and hold a valid Florida driver's license, you may qualify for the Florida Statute 627.0652. The course focuses on accident prevention, safe driving strategies and habits for driving defensively, all while being available online.

Advanced Driver Improvement (ADI)

This 12-hour program is required if your license has been suspended or revoked due to excessive points, habitual traffic offender status or by court order.

Florida 4-Hour Basic Driver Improvement (BDI)

Florida Basic Driver Improvement is a 4-hour course that motorists can take when issued a traffic citation, when required by the courts or to get an insurance discount (at the discretion of the insurance company). It's also known as a Traffic Collision Avoidance Class (TCAC).

The online course is delivered in four modules and covers topics such as:

  • Florida Road Laws
  • Defensive Driving Strategies
  • Driving under the Influence
  • Adverse Driving Conditions

If your citation was the result of a moving violation, this completion will remove any points associated with the ticket, prevent insurance premium increases and possibly reduce the fine of the ticket.

You will receive a certificate within five business days of course completion.

Court Locations and Information

When you have successfully completed the traffic school course and received your certificate, you must file it with the appropriate court where the citation was issued.
